Course outcome

Achieve a Pearson Edexcel International A Level Physics (IAS / IAL).

Entry requirements

GCSE Physics (or Combined Science) is recommended; confidence with algebra and rearranging formulae is helpful.

Assessment

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and delivered through six externally assessed written units (including practical‑skills papers).

Physics develops understanding of mechanics, waves, electricity and modern physics, with strong emphasis on maths, modelling and experimental thinking.

  • Mechanics: kinematics, dynamics, work, energy and power
  • Waves and optics; electric circuits and electrical concepts
  • Fields and particles; quantum and particle physics concepts
  • Thermodynamics, radiation and nuclear physics
  • Oscillations, resonance, astrophysics and cosmology
  • Practical physics: planning investigations, measurement uncertainties, data analysis
  • Unit 1 topics include kinematics/dynamics, energy, materials, equilibrium/stability (IAS).
  • Unit 2: Waves and Electricity (IAS – 20%) — 1h30 exam; waves/optics, circuits, quantum/particle physics.
  • Unit 3: Practical Skills in Physics I (IAS – 10%) — 1h20 exam; core practical investigations and uncertainties.
  • Unit 4 (IA2 – 20%): Further Mechanics, Fields and Particles — 1h45 exam; gravitation, EM fields, induction, particle physics.
  • Unit 5 (IA2 – 20%): Thermodynamics, Radiation, Oscillations and Cosmology — 1h45 exam; thermodynamics, nuclear, SHM, astrophysics.
  • Unit 6 (IA2 – 10%): Practical Skills in Physics II — 1h20 exam; advanced investigations and statistical/maths methods.

You have up to 24 months to complete the course and can plan your study around work, family and other commitments; a faster study pace is possible if you’re working to a deadline.

Study 100% online with structured materials you can access anytime. Your support option may include tutor guidance, feedback and exam preparation resources to help you stay on track.

International A Level Physics IAS / IAL (Pearson Edexcel). Qualification Codes: WPH11/ WPH12/ WPH13 (IAS), WPH14/ WPH15/ WPH16 (IAL).

Supports progression into engineering, physics, medicine and other STEM routes, building problem-solving, mathematical and practical skills.

This qualification can contribute UCAS points based on the grade achieved and may support university applications alongside course‑specific entry requirements.
