Assessment is set by Cambridge International and delivered through externally assessed written examinations that test sociological knowledge, research methods and evaluative skills.

Cambridge International assessment for AS & A Level Sociology comprises four externally assessed written papers:

  • Paper 1 (AS – 50%): Socialisation, Identity, Social Control & Research Methods — written exam evaluating sociological concepts and research tools.
  • Paper 2 (AS – 50%): The Family — written exam focusing on family theories, diversity and policies.
  • Paper 3 (A Level – 20%): Education — written exam assessing sociological perspectives on education and social inequality.
  • Paper 4 (A Level – 30%): Globalisation, Media & Religion — written exam covering media influence, global systems and religious roles within society.
Most learners take their exams online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre. If you choose to sit your exams in person, you may opt to book an external exam centre — speak to an advisor about your options.

You have up to 24 months to complete the course, giving you the flexibility to fit in study alongside work, family and personal commitments. A fast-track option is available for learners with specific progression goals.
