Assessment

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and delivered through four externally assessed written examinations (Units 1–4).

Economics develops understanding of micro and macro principles and how policy, markets and global forces shape real-world outcomes.

  • Introduction to economics, resource allocation and economic systems
  • Consumer and producer behaviour (demand/supply, elasticity, equilibrium)
  • Market failure and government intervention (externalities, public goods, policy)
  • Macroeconomic performance and policy (inflation, unemployment, growth, balance of payments; AD/AS; fiscal/monetary/supply-side)
  • Market structures and business behaviour (competition, monopoly, oligopoly; pricing strategies; labour markets)
  • Global economy (trade, exchange rates, balance of payments; development and inequality)
  • Unit 1 (IAS – 25%): Microeconomic Foundations — topics include demand/supply, market failure; exam format: external written exam.
  • Unit 2 (IAS – 25%): Macroeconomic Performance and Policy — 1h45 external written exam.
  • Unit 3 (IA2 – 25%): Business Behaviour — 2h external written exam; market structures, pricing, labour markets.
  • Unit 4 (IA2 – 25%): Developments in the Global Economy — 2h external written exam; trade, exchange rates, development.
