Entry requirements

This course is designed to be studied alongside A Level Mathematics and is most suitable for learners with strong mathematical confidence; support is available for adults returning to study.

Assessment

Assessment is set by Cambridge International and delivered through externally assessed written papers that focus on advanced mathematical reasoning, proof, problem solving and specialised topic areas.

Further Mathematics extends the depth and breadth of mathematical study beyond the core A Level, offering advanced topics in pure mathematics, mechanics and statistics that support higher-level analytical thinking and preparation for maths-intensive university degrees.

  • Further Pure Mathematics 1: Polynomial roots, series, functions, matrices and transformations, complex numbers and vectors.
  • Further Mechanics: Concepts of momentum, impulse, energy, circular motion, simple harmonic motion and elastic systems.
  • Further Pure Mathematics 2: Differential equations, hyperbolic functions, advanced complex numbers, advanced matrices and polar coordinates.
  • Further Probability & Statistics: Advanced probability distributions, estimation, hypothesis testing, correlation, regression, central limit theorem and moment generating functions.

Assessment consists of four externally assessed written papers under the Cambridge International specification:

  • Paper 1 (AS): Further Pure Mathematics 1 — written exam
  • Paper 3 (AS): Further Mechanics — written exam
  • Paper 2 (A Level): Further Pure Mathematics 2 — written exam
  • Paper 4 (A Level): Further Probability & Statistics — written exam
Exams are typically completed online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre. If preferred, you may opt to sit exams at an external exam centre — speak to an advisor about the arrangements and your options.

You have up to 24 months to complete this qualification, enabling you to fit study around work, family and other commitments. A fast-track option is available for learners with specific deadlines or progression goals.

This course is delivered 100% online, with access to structured lessons, guided exercises and revision resources that you can work through at your own pace. Optional tutor support and feedback can help you understand complex ideas and prepare for assessments.

Cambridge International AS & A Level Further Mathematics (9616). This internationally recognised qualification equips learners with advanced mathematical insights valued in university and technical careers.

Completing Further Mathematics supports progression to competitive maths-heavy degrees such as Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Computer Science and Economics, and careers in data science, research, finance and advanced analytics.

This qualification carries UCAS points based on the grades achieved, which may support entry to UK universities alongside any specific entry requirements for your chosen programme.
