Course outcome

Achieve a Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Chemistry (4CH1). A recognised Level 2 science qualification that builds scientific understanding and supports progression to further study or career pathways.

Entry requirements

No formal science qualifications are required to start, although a good grounding in science and mathematics helps; the course is designed with support for adult learners returning to study.

Assessment

Assessment is delivered through externally set written examinations by Pearson Edexcel that assess your knowledge, data interpretation and scientific reasoning.

International GCSE Chemistry introduces the principles that explain how matter behaves and interacts. You will develop a solid foundation in atomic structure, bonding, reactions, energy changes, rates of reaction, acids and bases, periodic trends, chemical analysis and organic chemistry. Skills such as interpreting data, explaining scientific phenomena and applying knowledge to real-world scenarios are emphasised throughout the course.

At Lifelong Learning College, this course is delivered online with flexible pacing and support that meets the needs of adult learners. Whether you’re returning to education, seeking progression to A Levels or preparing for a career that values scientific literacy, this course builds capability and confidence in chemistry.

The course covers key areas of chemistry, including:

  • The structure of atoms, elements and compounds, including electrons, protons and neutrons and how they influence chemical behaviour
  • Bonding and structure: ionic, covalent and metallic bonds, and how structure relates to properties such as melting point, conductivity and strength
  • Chemical reactions: balancing equations, conservation of mass, energy changes and quantitative aspects such as reacting masses and calculations using relative atomic mass
  • Rates of reaction and factors that influence speed, including temperature, concentration and catalysts
  • Acids, bases and salts, including pH, indicators and neutralisation reactions
  • Periodic table: trends in properties across groups and periods, and how elements are classified
  • Chemical analysis techniques such as chromatography, tests for gases and identifying ions
  • Organic chemistry fundamentals including hydrocarbons, functional groups and basic reactions
  • Energy changes in reactions, including exothermic and endothermic processes and energy profiles

Throughout your study, you will build the ability to interpret graphs and experimental data, evaluate evidence and solve problems through logical reasoning and scientific method.

This qualification is assessed through two externally examined written papers, each contributing a different proportion to the final grade. Both papers feature a combination of multiple-choice, short-answer, structured, and extended-response questions.

Chemistry Paper 1

Contribution to Final Grade: 61.1%

Assessment Time:

2 hours

Assessment Method:

Externally set and marked written examination

Main Areas of Study:

Principles of Chemistry: atomic structure, chemical bonding, and quantitative chemistry

Inorganic Chemistry: the periodic table, patterns of reactivity, and the chemistry of acids, bases, and salts

Physical Chemistry: reaction rates, energy changes, and chemical equilibria

Organic Chemistry: alkanes, alkenes, alcohols, carboxylic acids, and polymer formation

Chemistry Paper 2

Contribution to Final Grade: 38.9%

Assessment Time:

1 hour and 15 minutes

Assessment Method:

Externally set and marked written examination

Assessment Focus:

Covers content from across the full specification, including material introduced in Paper 1

Examines selected topics in greater depth, with highlighted content assessed at a higher level

Assesses understanding of practical investigations, experimental techniques, and data analysis

Together, the two examinations assess both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding, ensuring students can apply chemical principles, interpret experimental data, and explain scientific ideas clearly

Together, the two examinations assess both theoretical knowledge and practical understanding, ensuring students can apply chemical principles, interpret experimental data, and explain scientific ideas clearly.

Assessment for International GCSE Chemistry is set by Pearson Edexcel and typically consists of two externally examined written papers.

Paper 1

Assesses a broad range of fundamental chemistry topics such as atomic structure, bonding, chemical reactions and quantitative chemistry.

Generally covers further topics such as organic chemistry, energy, rates, practical skills and analysis.

The exams include a variety of question styles including multiple choice, structured questions, data interpretation and longer written explanations.

They are designed to test both recall of knowledge and your ability to apply understanding in practical and theoretical contexts.

You can take your exams online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre and can support you with the booking and administration. If you prefer to sit exams in person, you may also choose to sit them at an external exam centre — our advisors can help you plan the best approach.

  • This qualification is graded on the UK 9–1 scale and is recognised for progression into A Levels, vocational qualifications, apprenticeships and science-related careers.
  • Chemistry skills support careers in healthcare, environmental science, engineering, laboratory work and many other technical areas.
  • Lifelong Learning College provides a combination of structured resources, guided learning activities and support tools to help you build understanding and exam confidence.
Is this course suitable for adult learners?

Yes, it is designed for flexible online study with support options that help you manage study alongside other life commitments.

With Community Support, you have up to 12 months’ access. If you choose the fully taught programme, you have up to 24 months to complete the course.

While a foundation in science or maths helps, this course supports learners at all levels with guided explanations and structured learning to build your confidence.

Practical techniques are assessed through written exam questions that test your understanding of experimental approach, data interpretation and chemical reasoning, there is no requirement to attend laboratory sessions when you choose online assessment.

Yes, you can usually take your exams online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre. If you prefer to sit exams in person at an external centre, that option is available, speak to an advisor about your preferred route.

Support varies depending on your study package. Community Support gives you access to learning materials and guided activities, while the fully taught programme includes structured tutor support, feedback and exam preparation guidance.
