Assessment

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and consists of externally examined written papers that evaluate psychological theory, research methods, application and data interpretation.

This course introduces learners to core psychological concepts, theories and research techniques that help explain human behaviour. Adult learners will develop scientific thinking, analytical skills and an understanding of how psychological research applies to real-world contexts — providing a strong foundation for further study or career pathways.

  • Research methods and statistics: understanding experimental design, data collection, analysis and research ethics
  • Social psychology: social influence, group dynamics and behaviour in social contexts
  • Cognitive psychology: memory, attention, perception and problem-solving processes
  • Biological psychology: brain structure, neural communication, biopsychological approaches and behaviour relationships
  • Learning theories: classical conditioning, operant conditioning and observational learning
  • Developmental psychology: human development and attachment across the lifespan
  • Applied psychology: areas such as criminological, health or clinical psychology, including disorders and treatment approaches
Assessment under the Pearson Edexcel specification consists of four externally assessed written exams across IAS and full A Level:

  • Unit 1 (IAS – 40%): Social and Cognitive Psychology — external written exam covering basic theory, research methods and topics such as memory and social influence.
  • Unit 2 (IAS – 60%): Biological Psychology, Learning Theories and Development — external written exam assessing understanding of biopsychology, conditioning and human development.
  • Unit 3 (IA2 – 40%): Applications of Psychology — 1h30 external exam applying psychological concepts to real-world cases.
  • Unit 4 (IA2 – 60%): Clinical Psychology and Psychological Skills — 2h external written exam focusing on clinical disorders, treatments, ethics and statistical interpretation.
