Assessment

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and delivered through six externally assessed written units (including practical‑skills papers).

Biology builds understanding from molecules and cells through to whole‑organism systems and ecosystems, with an emphasis on scientific enquiry and data analysis.

  • Experimental techniques: microscopy, chromatography, enzyme assays; biochemical tests; PCR and electrophoresis
  • Critical thinking and problem‑solving: evaluating hypotheses, reliability and validity; applying concepts to real contexts
  • Mathematical and data analysis: statistics, rates, calculations and interpreting graphs
Six externally assessed written units split across IAS and IAL.

  • Unit 1 (IAS – 20%): Molecules, Diet, Transport and Health — 1h30 exam; biomolecules, enzymes, transport, health and disease.
  • Unit 2 (IAS – 20%): Cells, Development, Biodiversity and Conservation — 1h30 exam; cells, gene expression, biodiversity, conservation.
  • Unit 3 (IAS – 10%): Practical Skills in Biology I — 1h20 exam; core practicals, experimental design and error analysis.
  • Unit 4 (IA2 – 20%): Energy, Environment, Microbiology and Immunity — 1h45 exam; photosynthesis/respiration, microbiology, biotech, immunity.
  • Unit 5 (IA2 – 20%): Internal Environment, Coordination and Gene Technology — 1h45 exam; homeostasis, control, gene technology.
  • Unit 6 (IA2 – 10%): Practical Skills in Biology II — 1h20 exam; advanced investigations and statistical methods.
Assessment objectives listed: AO1 30%, AO2 40%, AO3 30%.
