Course duration

Approximately 360 guided learning hours, with up to 24 months to complete, plus an optional fast‑track route if you need to finish sooner.

Course outcome

Achieve a Pearson Edexcel International A Level Chemistry (IAS / IAL).

Entry requirements

GCSE Chemistry (or Combined Science) is recommended; basic algebra and rearranging equations is helpful for calculations.

Assessment

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and delivered through six externally assessed written units (including practical‑skills papers).

Chemistry develops understanding of atomic structure, bonding, energetics and organic chemistry, alongside practical skills and quantitative problem-solving.

  • Atomic structure and periodicity; bonding and molecular structure
  • Formulae, equations and stoichiometry (mole calculations, yields)
  • Organic chemistry foundations and mechanisms
  • Energetics and thermodynamics; kinetics and equilibria
  • Transition metals, redox and spectroscopy (IR, NMR, mass spectrometry)
  • Practical chemistry: titrations, calorimetry, qualitative analysis, chromatography and data handling
Six externally assessed written units split across IAS and IAL.

  • Unit 1 (IAS – 20%): Structure, Bonding and Introduction to Organic Chemistry — 1h30 exam; atomic structure, bonding, stoichiometry, intro organic.
  • Unit 2 (IAS – 20%): Energetics, Group Chemistry, Halogenoalkanes and Alcohols — 1h30 exam; thermodynamics, groups 1/2/7, mechanisms, equilibria.
  • Unit 3 (IAS – 10%): Practical Skills in Chemistry I — 1h20 exam; experimental design, titrations, calorimetry, qualitative analysis, risk/error.
  • Unit 4 (IA2 – 20%): Rates, Equilibria and Further Organic Chemistry — 1h45 exam; rate equations, buffers, synthesis pathways.
  • Unit 5 (IA2 – 20%): Transition Metals and Organic Nitrogen Chemistry — 1h45 exam; complex ions, electrochemistry, amines/amides, spectroscopy.
  • Unit 6 (IA2 – 10%): Practical Skills in Chemistry II — 1h20 exam; advanced lab work, chromatography, data interpretation, maths/statistics.

You have up to 24 months to complete the course and can plan your study around work, family and other commitments; a faster study pace is possible if you’re working to a deadline.

Study 100% online with structured materials you can access anytime. Your support option may include tutor guidance, feedback and exam preparation resources to help you stay on track.

International A Level Chemistry IAS / IAL (Pearson Edexcel). Qualification Codes: XCH11 (IAS), YCH11 (IAL).

Supports progression into chemistry, medicine, engineering and environmental sciences, and builds transferable analytical and quantitative skills.

This qualification can contribute UCAS points based on the grade achieved and may support university applications alongside course‑specific entry requirements.

Is this course suitable for adults?

Yes, it’s designed to be studied flexibly and can suit adults returning to education or planning a new route to university or work.

Up to 24 months, with an optional fast‑track route if required.

You’ll use calculations throughout (moles, energetics, pH and equilibria), but resources and structured practice support you step by step.

Exams are taken in person at an approved exam centre; guidance can be provided on booking and next steps.

Support depends on your chosen package and may include tutor guidance, feedback and study resources.
