Assessment

Assessment is set by Cambridge International and delivered through externally assessed written examinations that test sociological knowledge, research methods and evaluative skills.

Sociology introduces learners to the study of society, social structures and interaction. You’ll explore how social behaviour, institutions and cultural influences shape individual and group experiences, building analytical and evaluation skills useful for higher education and many careers.

  • Socialisation, Identity and Social Control: how individuals learn norms, values and roles within society
  • Research Methods: quantitative and qualitative approaches, ethical considerations, validity and reliability
  • Family, Relationships & Diversity: family structures, policies, cultural change and diversity impacts
  • Education & Inequality: how class, gender and ethnicity shape educational outcomes and social opportunity
  • Media & Society: the role of media in shaping perceptions, influence on identity and global communication
  • Globalisation, Religion & Social Order: topics exploring global connections, belief systems and societal structure

Cambridge International assessment for AS & A Level Sociology comprises four externally assessed written papers:

  • Paper 1 (AS – 50%): Socialisation, Identity, Social Control & Research Methods — written exam evaluating sociological concepts and research tools.
  • Paper 2 (AS – 50%): The Family — written exam focusing on family theories, diversity and policies.
  • Paper 3 (A Level – 20%): Education — written exam assessing sociological perspectives on education and social inequality.
  • Paper 4 (A Level – 30%): Globalisation, Media & Religion — written exam covering media influence, global systems and religious roles within society.
