This course involves around 360 guided learning hours, with 12 months’ access on Community Support or up to 24 months on a fully taught programme depending on the level of guidance you choose.

Course outcome

Achieve a Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Biology (4BI1). A recognised Level 2 science qualification that builds scientific understanding and supports further study or career progression.

Entry requirements

No formal science qualifications are required to begin, though a good grounding in GCSE Science or Maths is helpful, this course is designed to support adult learners returning to education.

Assessment

Assessment is delivered through externally set written examinations by Pearson Edexcel that test scientific knowledge, application and practical analysis skills.

The International GCSE Biology course introduces core biological concepts and scientific practices that help explain the living world around us. You will explore topics such as cell structure, human biology, ecology, genetics and plant/animal systems, with a focus on understanding scientific processes, interpreting data and applying knowledge to real-world scenarios.

The course is structured to cover a balanced range of biology topics:

  • Cell Biology: cell structure, transport mechanisms, enzymes and cellular systems
  • Organisation and Body Systems: tissues, organs, circulatory, respiratory and digestive systems
  • Infection & Response: pathogens, immune response and disease control
  • Bioenergetics: photosynthesis and cellular respiration
  • Homeostasis and Response: nervous coordination, hormones and human regulation
  • Inheritance, Variation & Evolution: genetics, DNA, natural selection and biodiversity
  • Ecology & Environment: ecosystems, energy flow, nutrient cycles and conservation

You’ll also develop scientific skills including interpreting graphs, designing investigations, evaluating evidence and linking theory with practical understanding.

This qualification is assessed through two externally examined written papers, each contributing a specific percentage to the overall grade. Both examinations include a variety of question formats, including multiple-choice, short-answer, structured, and extended-response questions.

Biology Paper 1

Contribution to Final Grade: 61.1%

Assessment Time:

2 hours

Assessment Method:

Externally set and marked written examination

Main Areas of Study:

Nature and Diversity of Living Organisms: classification systems and the defining characteristics of life

Structure and Function in Living Systems: cells, nutrition, respiration, and homeostatic control

Reproduction and Inheritance: genetics, DNA, and sexual and asexual reproduction

Ecology and the Environment: energy transfer, food chains and webs, pollution, and biodiversity

Use of Biological Resources: biotechnology, selective breeding, and genetic modification

Paper 2: Further Pure Mathematics

Contribution to Final Grade: 38.9%

Assessment Time:

1 hour and 15 minutes

Assessment Method:

Externally set and marked written examination

Assessment Focus:

Draws on content from across the full specification, including topics introduced in Paper 1

Assesses selected areas in greater depth, with highlighted content examined at a higher level

Evaluates understanding of practical work, experimental methods, and data interpretation

Together, the two papers assess both biological knowledge and practical scientific skills, ensuring students can apply concepts, analyse experimental results, and communicate scientific ideas clearly.

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and consists of two externally assessed written papers:

Paper 1

covers cell biology, organisation, infection, bioenergetics and associated skills

covers homeostasis, inheritance, ecology and data interpretation

The exams incorporate a mix of multiple-choice, short answer and structured extended response questions. They test both factual knowledge and scientific reasoning.

You can typically take your biology assessments online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre and support the exam booking process for you. If you would prefer to sit your exams in person, you can also arrange to sit them at a local exam centre — an advisor can help you plan the best option.

  • This qualification is graded on the recognised 9–1 scale and is widely accepted for progression into further study such as A Levels, vocational courses, apprenticeships and healthcare pathways.
  • Biological understanding is valuable in careers across nursing, healthcare, laboratory sciences, environmental work, teaching and more.
  • Lifelong Learning College provides structured learning resources, practice activities and flexible support to help you build confidence and succeed.
Is this course suitable for adult learners?

Yes, it’s designed for flexible online study that fits around work, family and personal commitments, with support available whether you choose Community Support or the fully taught programme.

With Community Support you have 12 months’ access to self-paced resources; if you choose the fully taught programme, you have up to 24 months to complete the course.

While a good foundation in GCSE Science or Mathematics is useful, this course supports learners at all levels and helps build confidence in scientific reasoning.

Practical science understanding is assessed through written exam questions that test your ability to interpret data and evaluate scientific investigations, there is no separate lab attendance required for online assessment.

Yes, exams are typically taken online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre. If you prefer, you can arrange to sit them in person at an external centre.

Support varies depending on your chosen study route. Community Support provides access to all learning materials and peer/network guidance, while the fully taught programme includes structured tutor guidance and feedback to aid comprehension and exam preparation.

Yes, International GCSE Biology is widely recognised and can support progression to A Levels (including Sciences), Access programmes, apprenticeships and science-related career pathways
