Course duration

International GCSE History introduces learners to major historical events, movements and interpretations that have shaped nations, societies and global relationships. You’ll explore a variety of topics that deepen your understanding of how history has unfolded and been interpreted:

  • Nation-Based Studies: Understanding major historical developments in countries such as Germany, Britain, the United States, Russia/Soviet Union and South Africa depending on the chosen specification focus.
  • Revolutions and Transformations: Investigation of turning points such as the Industrial Revolution, political revolutions, civil rights movements or changes in governance.
  • Conflict and Cooperation: Analysis of war, peace processes, diplomacy, power struggles and international relations in the 19th and 20th centuries.
  • Social Change and Culture: How societies evolved in terms of social structures, rights, culture, migration and identity.
  • Source Evaluation: Development of skills in evaluating primary and secondary historical sources, considering bias, context and reliability.
  • Interpretations and Argument: Building the ability to make historically grounded arguments, compare viewpoints and write structured responses.

These topics are studied through a combination of thematic, chronological and case study approaches so that you gain a rounded view of the past and its significance for today.

This qualification is assessed through two externally examined written papers, each contributing 50% to the overall grade.

Paper 1: Depth Studies

    Italian Unification (1848–1870): the process of creating a unified Italian state
  • Germany and the Development of Dictatorship (1918–1945): from the Weimar Republic to Nazi rule and the Second World War
    Dictatorship and Conflict in the USSR (1924–1953): Stalin’s leadership and Soviet domestic and foreign policy
  • World Divided: Superpower Relations (1943–1972): Cold War tensions and the nuclear arms race
  • A Divided Union: Civil Rights in the USA (1945–1974): protest, reform, and political challenges
  • South Africa from Union to the End of Apartheid (1948–1994): resistance, reform, and the collapse of apartheid

Paper 2: Historical Investigations and Breadth Studies

  • The Changing Role of International Organisations (1919–2011)
  • The Changing Nature of Warfare and International Conflict (1919–2011)
  • The Middle East: Conflict, Crisis, and Change (1917–2012)
    Diversity, Rights, and Equality in Britain (1914–2010)

Both examinations feature a range of question styles, including source-based analysis, short-answer questions, structured responses, and extended written answers, allowing students to demonstrate historical knowledge, analytical skills, and evaluative judgement.
