You will study the Spanish language through engaging topics and practical communication tasks, including:

  • Identity and lifestyle: talking about family, relationships, personal interests and daily routines
  • Home and local area: describing where you live, community features and local facilities
  • Education and work: discussing school, future plans, employment and aspirations
  • Travel and tourism: planning trips, using transport vocabulary, navigating new environments
  • Social issues and culture: exploring media, traditions, celebrations and social concerns in Spanish-speaking contexts
  • Grammar and vocabulary development: building core structures such as tenses, agreement, sentence patterns and expansions
  • Skills integration: practising listening comprehension, reading different text types, written expression and spoken interaction

You’ll learn to communicate in Spanish for both practical purposes and reflective discussion, mastering the foundations of an additional language.

This qualification is assessed through three externally examined components, each designed to measure a different aspect of Spanish language ability.

Paper 1: Listening

30 minutes, with an additional 5 minutes allocated for reading through questions

Paper 3: Speaking

Each assessment unit targets a specific language skill and is marked independently, ensuring a balanced and comprehensive evaluation of listening, reading, writing, and speaking ability.

Assessment for International GCSE Spanish is set by Pearson Edexcel and typically includes both written and spoken components designed to test your language proficiency:

  • Listening and Understanding: responding to authentic spoken Spanish at a range of speeds and contexts.
  • Reading and Understanding: interpreting written texts such as articles, dialogues and cultural material.
  • Written Expression: composing structured written responses, essays and descriptive pieces.
  • Speaking: demonstrating spoken Spanish through prepared and spontaneous tasks to show fluency and accuracy.
