Entry requirements

No formal prerequisites, this course is designed for adult learners wishing to rebuild, strengthen or complete their Mathematics qualification with tailored support available.

Assessment

Assessment is completed through externally set written examinations that test key mathematical knowledge and problem-solving abilities.

International GCSE Mathematics (Pearson Edexcel 1MA1) equips adult learners with the mathematical understanding and problem-solving skills needed in further study, employment and everyday life. You’ll build fluency in number, algebra, geometry, statistics and probability through structured online learning that supports development at every stage.

At Lifelong Learning College, this Mathematics course is tailored for adults returning to education, offering flexible pacing, guided resources and structured support to help you succeed with confidence.

Throughout the course, you will develop a broad range of mathematical skills, including:

  • Number and algebra: fractions, percentages, indices, equations and sequences
  • Geometry and measures: shapes, angles, areas, volume and transformations
  • Ratio and proportion: proportional reasoning, rates and direct/inverse proportion
  • Statistics and probability: data representation, averages, probability models and interpretation
  • Problem solving: applying mathematical reasoning to real-world scenarios

This course focuses on both procedural fluency and conceptual understanding, ensuring you can use mathematics with confidence in study and daily life.

This course is taught using a linear assessment model, meaning all examinations are taken at the end of the course.

Examination Details

Assessment Summary:

Students complete two externally marked written examinations, with each paper accounting for 50% of the final qualification.

Examination length: 2 hours per paper

Question types: a combination of multiple-choice, short-answer, and structured questions

Tiered Entry Options:

Foundation Tier (Grades 5–1): Designed to reinforce essential mathematical knowledge and ensure confidence in core concepts and skills.

Higher Tier (Grades 9–4): Covers a broader and more demanding range of topics, with an emphasis on advanced problem-solving and extended mathematical techniques.

Skills Assessed Across Both Tiers:

Both tiers assess students’ ability to:

  • Use mathematical techniques accurately and efficiently
  • Apply logical reasoning and problem-solving strategies
  • Interpret, analyse, and work with numerical and graphical information
Examination Support:

Calculators: permitted in all examination papers

Formulae Sheet: provided for use during the exams

Assessment is set by Pearson Edexcel and consists of two externally examined written papers:

Paper 1 (Non-Calculator)

Requires mathematical reasoning without a calculator.

Allows use of a calculator to solve more complex problems.

Each paper assesses a balanced range of topics from algebra, number, geometry, statistics and probability. Examinations are designed to test your understanding and your ability to communicate mathematical thinking clearly.

Exams can be taken online through Lifelong Learning College, as we are an approved exams centre and support your exam journey from planning to completion. If you would prefer to sit exams in person, you can arrange to take them at a local exam centre — an advisor can support you with the best option.
